Day 4 - Perms and Lycra (The 1980’s)
Activity 1 - Hairy Maclary
On your blog, use the following sentence starter from the original book to finish the story.
“Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy…”
To earn full points, your story should have, at least, 8-10 sentences.

Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy and then I saw a butterfly flying in the air, I followed it and it leaded me to town. When I saw town I was amazed by people playing music, I couldn’t wait to explore town. While I was exploring, I saw a photographer taking a picture of a woman and her husband, I tried to be in the picture but the husband said “Shoo shoo, you smelly dog”. Then I went to the park where children was playing, I was playing with them, then they started to pat me with their hands and it was likeable. After that I could smell very delicious hot dog that someone was eating then I chased where it was coming from, then I found the person who was eating the hot dog. As I saw the person with the hot dog, I jumped and I was able to get a big amount of the hot dog, the tomato and mustard got on my lips I licked it, it was very enjoyable. After that I wanted to find somewhere shady because it was getting really really hot, then I found the perfect spot, underneath the tree, I fall of to sleep for 10 minutes and then I headed back home. When I went back to home I had a really cool ice bath, it was very very cool.

Activity 2 - The Big ‘OE’
Imagine that you are a student in the 1980s and you’re about to graduate from high school. Where would you like to go on your big OE? On your blog tell us which country you would visit and give us three (3) reasons for your choice. Find some pictures on the internet of things that you would like to see and do in this country.
I would go to China.
1. The first reason why I want to go China is because I want to go to the great wall of China and learn interesting facts about it.
2. The second reason why I want to go to China is because I want to know what they do on special occasions.
3. The third reason why I want to go to China is because I want to explore the towns and what kind of food they have.

Bonus Activity - The 4 O’Clock News
Imagine that you were Scotty Morrison and you were able to interview anyone you wanted. I would choose to interview our new prime minister, Jacinda Ardern. I’d love to know what it is like to be the Prime Minister.  What about you? Who would you choose to interview and why? What would you like to find out?

I would chose Obama because I want to learn some fun facts about him. I would like to found out how does it feel to meet some celebrities. Another thing that I want find out about him is how does he deal with the haters that hate on him. I would also like to know how he became the president and what did it take to become the president. I would also like to know what is the one thing that he hates about being president.

Summer Learning Journey Week 3 Day 3

Day 3 - Groovy Man (The 1970’s)
Activity 1 - Ready to Roll
Watch the following three clips that were shown on the Ready to Roll programme:
When you have finished, rank the clips in order from your most favourite (#1) to your least favourite (#3).
Post your rankings on your blog.

1. My Favourite one is the Ray Columbus and the Invaders, this is my favourite
one because I love this song and because we sang this in the kids for kids. This is also my favourite
one because it’s a really good song to dance to, I also like the beat.

2. My Second Favourite one is Golden Harvest, this is my second because
I like the song but I just don’t like lyrics.

3. My Least Favourite one is New Zealand Underdogs, this is my least favourite
song because the song is really boring but I like how they play the instruments

Activity 2 - Bell Bottom Pants
Fashion in the 1970s was quite unique. Take a look at the pictures of a ‘typical’
1970s outfit and tell us, on your blog, two things that you like about 1970s fashion and two things that
you don’t like about the fashion of the day. I am not a huge fan of the patterned pants. What about you?
Two things that I like about the outfit:
1. The first thing that I like about the outfit is that I like the colours.
2. The second thing that I like about the outfits is when it’s too hot you can wear the skirt like the girl in the middle. When it’s
cold you can wear the pants like the boys are wearing.
Two things that I don’t like about the outfit:
1. The first thing that I don’t like about the outfit is that the girls outfit needs a more colors.
2. The second thing I don’t like about the outfit is that the boys outfit needs like a bow or a tie, to make their outfit pop out more.

Bonus Activity - A Bilingual Schooling System
Think about your school. What is one thing that you would like change. Would you like to learn about different things? Maybe
you think school should only be open 3 days a week?
On your blog, write a letter to your principal to try and convince him/her to
make the change. Ensure that your letter is polite and respectful.
The thing that I want to change is if we could do 4 days a week.

My Letter for the Principal
Dear Mr. Coakley,

I would like to ask you if you could change one thing. That one thing that
I would like you to change, is to only do 4 days a week.
I think it’s good for us kids and also good for you and the teachers to spend more time with families.

I would also like to learn about the food from different countries and taste
testing them and I would also like to learn about obama and donald trump and different people like that.

From, Dianne

Summer Learning Journey Week 3 Day 2

Day 2 - Peace Out! (The 1960s)
Activity 1 - The Dawn of Television
What is your favourite television show at the moment? On your blog tell us about your favourite television
show. What is it about? Who are the main characters? What channel is it on?
My Favourite television show at the moment is Stuck in the middle. It is about a girl being in a large family
and she is the middle child, her name is
Harley Diaz and she says that it isn’t easy being the middle child.

So she feels that she needs to comes up with creative ideas to stand out in her family’s crowded home,
where she lives with her parents and her 6 siblings.

The menagerie that is the Diaz children includes self-involved Rachel, basketball-playing Georgie,
invincible twins Lewie and "Beast," strong-willed
youngster Daphne, and Ethan, Harley's closest ally.

The main characters are Harley Diaz. This television show is on The Walt Disney show, 100. This is my
favourite TV show at the moment because it
kinds of connect my family like her siblings touch things
without permission and that is exactly the same thing as me. But I don’t come up with creative ways.

Activity 2 - Rock ‘n’ Roll
Read about their tour of New Zealand below, and then post three interesting facts about The Beatles Tour
on your blog.
1. One girl hurt her leg from trying to climb over a wire fence.
2. The Beatles waved to the fans who lined the roads from the airport all the way to town.
3. Teenagers pushed over and damaged two police motorbikes; there was so much pushing that one of
The Beatles’ cars was shunted backwards,
even with the handbrake on.

Summer Learning Journey Week 3 Day 1

Week 3 Day 1 - White Picket Fences (The 1950s)
Activity 1 - Meat and Three Veg
On your blog tell us if you think that the ‘meat and three veg’ rule is a good one. Do you like the rule?
Would you enjoy eating a typical 1950s dinner? Why or why not?
The meat and three veg rule is a good one. Yes, I do like the rule because I think it is a healthy one that makes
sure we eat healthy food every day. We need to eat healthy food
so we can be active all day and nothing goes wrong with us. Healthy food is vegetables and fruits.

Activity 2 - What’s in a Name?
On your blog, tell us which names are currently popular in your school. Please provide, at least, three girls’
names and three boys’ names that are popular.
Girls/Boys
Ava/Joseph
Lili/Christopher
Layla/Peter

Bonus Activity - Snail Mail
For this activity, imagine that you are living in New Zealand in the 1950s. Use Google Draw* to design the
front of a postcard that you could send to a friend. Try to include elements of
Kiwiana in your design (e.g. Pohutukawa trees, Hokey Pokey ice cream, etc). Post a copy of your
postcard picture to your blog. Be sure to describe what you have drawn on your blog beneath the picture.

I chose the Beehive that is in Wellington, New Zealand because I would like to visit one day at the beehive and
because it is the New Zealand Parliament building. The beehive was first
opened in 1977, Feb 28 by Queen Elizabeth. It’s common name for it is called “Executive Wing.”

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 5

Day 5 - VE Day
Activity 1
On your blog, tell us all about your (imaginary) VE party.
If it was me, I would invite all of my closest friends and family over to my house for a big barbecue. We would eat hamburgers and play basketball in the driveway. Some of us would probably walk to the local beach to play soccer on the beach and to go for a swim (if the weather was warm enough)!
I would invite my closest friends and family. We could pack some cooked Tongan food and go to the beach on a sunny day. We would bring mats to sit on. I would play sand volleyball and bullrush with my friends.

Activity 2 - Making a Fashion Statement
On your blog tell us which of the two styles you prefer and why. The pictures above were taken over 65 years ago! What do you think people will be wearing 65 years from now?

I would prefer the one on the left because it has hats, gloves and they wear dresses that are down. I would prefer the one on the left because when it’s sunny I can protect my skin from the sun. I also would chose the one on the left because sometimes I like it when the dresses are down.

Bonus Activity - Sweet Tooth
I usually have a chocolate chip cookie with my tea. I love biscuits! What is your favourite sweet treat or dessert? Use google to find a recipe for it. Type the recipe out on your blog. Make sure you also include a picture.

I like Cake pops because you can decorate it and do another flavor like red velvet, vanilla, banana and chocolate. I also like this is because you can create different shapes like owls, Hearts, Christmas presents, snowmen and roses.

Ingredients
  • Chocolate Cake, prepared (I used ½ of a 9x13 devils food box cake)

  • sprinkles
Instructions

  1. Add cake to a large bowl.
  2. Crumble until it resembles fine crumbs
  3. Add in frosting a little bit at a time until cake is moist and can hold a ball shape, yet still slightly crumbly.
  4. Use your hands to incorporate the frosting into the cake crumbs.
  5. Use a mini ice cream scoop and scoop out two balls of cake mixture.
  6. Roll the mixture into a tight ball and place on a plate.
  7. Repeat until all the cake mixture has been rolled into balls.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 4

Day 4 - Another World War (1939-1945)
Activity 1 - An Eventful Experience
Choose two key events and find out some more information about what happened on those days. On your blog, write a short summary of two events, including the names of people involved and where the event happened.

Event 1
I chose 3 September: Britain, France, New Zealand and Australia declare war on Germany.
I found on the 3rd of September, in 1939, in reaction to Hitler's invasion of Poland, France and Britain, declare war on Germany.
British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told Germany they had until a certain time to leave Poland or they would declare war. Germany did not listen so Britain declared war. Acting Prime Minister for New Zealand, Peter Fraser announced that New Zealand was at war with Germany at about the same time as Britain. This was the Second World War.

Event 2
I chose 7 April: Italy invades Albania. I found that the Italian area of Albania (April 7–12, 1939) was a brief military campaign by the Kingdom of Italy against the Albanian Kingdom. The conflict was a result of the imperialist policies of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Albania was rapidly overrun, its ruler, King Zog I, forced into exile, and the country made part of the Italian Empire as  unconnected kingdom in personal union with the Italian crown.

Activity 2 - A Call to cArms
Click on this link to find a list of VC winners. Choose one from the Second World War, and read about him. On your blog tell us about him. Who was he? What did he do to earn a Victoria Cross medal?

From the second World War, I chose John Hinton. He was a New Zealand soldier, he earned the Victoria Cross because he had the highest award for courageous behaviour even in battle  in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, for his actions at Kalamata on 29 April 1941 during the Battle of Greece.

Bonus Activity - Woman at Work
For this activity, you are going to imagine that you are just like Dorothy and that you are working as a nurse on a large medical ship.
Complete the story provided above. To earn full points you must write, at least, 8-10 sentences. What happens next?

One day you are walking along the deck of the ship when you hear a loud bang. You start to run as you see smoke coming from the far end of the ship. You run towards the room where your patients are waiting to receive treatment from the doctor. Just as you arrive at the door to their room you hear another loud bang and you quickly open the door to see what you can do to help the patients. “What was that bang?” they ask you nervously.“What are we going to do, nurse?”.  “We are goi---” BANG!!! BANG!!! BANG!!!  Another 3 loud bangs shake the ship I bandage the patients wounds and check to see if the doctor is ok. I felt like the Bang was like a bomb exploding. I heard another BANG!!!. The only thing that I could smell was smoke and the smell of the smoke smelled really really bad. The ship was shaking so hard that some of the water and the fish came on the ship, then somehow the ship stopped shaking and then all the water and fishes went back to the sea.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 3

Day 3 - The Great Depression (The 1930s)
Activity 1 - Dealing with Stress
On your blog, please tell us what you do when you want to relax or de-stress.
Do you read a favourite book,
watch a favourite television show or talk to someone special?
What are your tips for dealing with stress?

When I want to relax or de-stress, I would usually go to sleep, read a book and watch
happy things on Youtube or listen to songs.

Activity 2 - Offering a Helping Hand
Imagine that you were alive in the 1930s. What could you have done to help these
families? On your blog, list three different
ways that you could raise funds for families to help them buy food and clothing.
Be as creative as you can with your fundraising ideas!

1. I would put on a car wash each day except for Saturday and Friday and the money
that I have, from the car wash I would send it to them.
2. I would send some food and drinks for them and healthy food so they can live better.
3. I would give them some of my clothes, my parents clothes and my siblings clothes
because we all have a lot of clothes.

Bonus Activity - Paying it Forward
Imagine that you were able to travel back in time to visit a family in the 1930s.
What special gifts or treats would you like to bring with you?
I would likely bring blocks of Whittaker’s chocolate, bags of Jet Planes and
Pineapple Lumps, healthy food snacks, clothing, and games for the children.
What about you?

I would bring these with me, for them chocolate - Black Forest, Kitkat, maltesers and
lollies - fruit burst, skittles, m&m's and red skins, Icecream - Boysenberry, Vanilla,
Hokey Pokey and cookies and cream , Fruits - apples, oranges, banana and berries,
Chips, drinks - water, clothes, shoes and Vegetables - carrots, broccoli and cauliflower.
I would bring these things for them because I feel like they need things
like these to eat, some that are treat food and some healthy food.
I would also give them blankets to keep them warm.
