Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 3

Day 3 - The Great Depression (The 1930s)
Activity 1 - Dealing with Stress
On your blog, please tell us what you do when you want to relax or de-stress.
Do you read a favourite book,
watch a favourite television show or talk to someone special?
What are your tips for dealing with stress?

When I want to relax or de-stress, I would usually go to sleep, read a book and watch
happy things on Youtube or listen to songs.

Activity 2 - Offering a Helping Hand
Imagine that you were alive in the 1930s. What could you have done to help these
families? On your blog, list three different
ways that you could raise funds for families to help them buy food and clothing.
Be as creative as you can with your fundraising ideas!

1. I would put on a car wash each day except for Saturday and Friday and the money
that I have, from the car wash I would send it to them.
2. I would send some food and drinks for them and healthy food so they can live better.
3. I would give them some of my clothes, my parents clothes and my siblings clothes
because we all have a lot of clothes.

Bonus Activity - Paying it Forward
Imagine that you were able to travel back in time to visit a family in the 1930s.
What special gifts or treats would you like to bring with you?
I would likely bring blocks of Whittaker’s chocolate, bags of Jet Planes and
Pineapple Lumps, healthy food snacks, clothing, and games for the children.
What about you?

I would bring these with me, for them chocolate - Black Forest, Kitkat, maltesers and
lollies - fruit burst, skittles, m&m's and red skins, Icecream - Boysenberry, Vanilla,
Hokey Pokey and cookies and cream , Fruits - apples, oranges, banana and berries,
Chips, drinks - water, clothes, shoes and Vegetables - carrots, broccoli and cauliflower.
I would bring these things for them because I feel like they need things
like these to eat, some that are treat food and some healthy food.
I would also give them blankets to keep them warm.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 2

Day 2 - The Roaring 20’s (The 1920s)
Activity 1 - Popular Culture – The Silent Movie
On your blog, tell us what you think the movie is about. There are no words
spoken movie so you will need to pay careful attention to what the actors
are doing! Do you think you would enjoy watching a silent film?
Why/Why not?

I think that the movie is about when gold was found and people went wild
because they wanted to get rich.
(This is a summary about the movie I found on the internet.)
“In this classic silent comedy, the Little Tramp (Charles Chaplin) heads
north to join in the Klondike gold rush. Trapped in a small cabin by a
blizzard, the Tramp is forced to share close quarters with a successful
prospector (Mack Swain) and a fugitive (Tom Murray). Eventually able to
leave the cabin, he falls for a lovely barmaid (Georgia Hale), trying valiantly
to win her affections. When the prospector needs help locating his claim,
it appears the Tramp's fortunes may change.”

I had to look up the words blizzard, prospector, barmaid, valiantly and
fugitive. These are their meanings:
Blizzard - A snowstorm with high winds
Fugitive - A person who has escaped from prison and is on the run
Barmaid - A person who works in a bar, who is also a waitress.
Prospector - A person who goes digging for gold.
Valiantly - being brave

I think I would enjoy a silent film so I can use my imagination and the
images to make up what I think the actors are saying.

Activity 2 - Art Deco
On your blog, give the painting a rating out of 5 stars
(1 star = terrible painting, 2 stars = pretty bad painting,
3 stars = okay painting, 4 stars = good painting and
5 stars = amazing painting). After you’ve rated the painting out of 5,
tell us why you gave it that rating.

I give it a 5 because I really like the painting. I think it’s very creative and
lovely because Tamara de Lempicka drew a picture of a woman in her car.
I wouldn’t even try to do an Art Deco painting because painting people
using geometry angles looks tricky.  I would also like to see another
Art Deco painting. I am interested in this Art Deco because I have learned
that it appeared in France just before World War 1.

Bonus Activity - Crossing the Tasman
Imagine that you were a member of the flight crew.
Write a poem that describes how you would have felt when you landed
safely in Christchurch after such a long trip. Remember, there are lots of
different types of poems, and they don’t all have to rhyme.
You can read more about different types of poems by clicking here.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 1

Week 2 Day 1 - The Early Years (Late 1800s – 1919)
Activity 1
Use your search engine to find a picture of another famous cathedral.
Post a picture of the cathedral on your blog.
Underneath the picture tell us: the name of the cathedral, where the cathedral is located,
when it was built, and how long it took to build.

Image result for Salisbury Cathedral
The Name of the Cathedral is called Salisbury Cathedral.
The Cathedral is located at 6 The Close, Salisbury, United Kingdom.
The Salisbury Cathedral was built in 1220.
The Salisbury Cathedral took 38 years to build.

Activity 2 - The Right to Vote
On your blog tell us what you think about the fact that women were not allowed to
vote in Saudi Arabia until 2015. Is it fair? Why or why not?

I think that it’s not fair because the women do everything like laundry, dishes,
dinner and other housework. The men just watch TV all day and sometimes work.
Women should have rights the same as men. They should be able to get a job and also
have say on who runs their country.

Bonus Activity - In Flanders Fields
On your blog, tell us what you think of the poem. Do you like it? How does it make you
feel?

I like the poem because I like it how it rhymes. I can never think of any words that
rhyme with the words in the poem. It makes me feel very, very sad because people
who were fighting for us died. The poppies red colour remind us of those people who
spilled their blood to keep us safe.

Summer Learning Journey Day 5

Day 5 - The Dawn of a New Era...
Activity 1 - Translating Phrases
Use Google Translate to translate the following five phrases from English to
Te Reo Māori or from Te Reo Māori to English. Post the translations on your blog.
Be sure to include the phrase in both the English and Māori to earn full points.

  1. Nau mai ki Aotearoa -     Welcome to New Zealand
  2. ____ is my name  -    Ko Toku Ingoa
  3. What is your name? - he aha to ingoa
  4. He pai taku ki te takaro i te whutupaoro. -    I like to play rugby
  5. Where do you come from? -     no hea koe?

Activity 2 - The Treaty of Waitangi
On your blog, tell us three fun things that you can do as a visitor in Waitangi.
Which one would you like to do the most?

1. You can learn tons of facts about Maori culture from the past to the present.
2. You can learn how to build different things from flax and learn about other Maori
crafts.
3. You can visit the Marae which is a courtyard of a Maori meeting house and you
can also learn different kinds of games that Maori used to play and still do today.

The one that I like the most is visit Maraes and learn Maori games.

I like this one the most because you can learn many things from these 2 activities.

Bonus Activity - #EarnTheFern
On your blog, write four questions that you would ask Bill Kini.

1. How does it feel to win a gold medal for being the best heavyweight boxer?
2. Have you tried any other sports other than rugby and boxing?
3. Who inspired you to become a boxer?

4. When was your first match and where did it take place?

Summer Learning Journey Day 4

Day 4 - Hitting a High Note Activity 1 - The Waiata - A Song in Your Heart. On your blog tell us which one of the waiata you found you like the most. Why do you like it? The song that I have found is the Tiaho mai rā and I like it because I have heard it on youtube about a million times. I have heard another version which I think is better. The song makes me feel happy because when you translate the Maori words they are happy sounding words such as shining, morning, star, love, world, moon and rising. The song is about a star in the night which is a reminder of everlasting love and love songs make me happy. Activity 2 - Playing Games. Hundreds of years ago, young Māori children were taught to play a number of games, including Poi Rakau, Ki O Rahi, Koruru Taonga and Poi Toa. Read about each of these four games on the Rangatahi tu Rangatira website. Have you played any of them before? Isn’t it cool how the games have been passed down for generations?. Choose one game, and on your blog, tell us the (i) name of the game: Poi Rakau. (ii) the goal or purpose of the game: Pass the rākau without dropping it or hitting other players. (iii) two rules: 1. You must catch the rākau with the opposite hand from the person throwing (If they throw with their right then you must catch with your left) 2. You have to then throw to the person on the side of the hand you threw from.
If you do anything different to these 2 rules you are out Bonus Activity - Musical Festivals – Matatini On your blog, rank the performances from your favourite (#1) to least favourite (#3) and tell us why you gave them the ranking that you did. #1 - Tamatea Arikinui - I picked this one as 1st because this one is my best one and I love their costume and their little poi. My favourite part was when they were swinging their poi. I would like to learn how to swing the poi like that.
#2 - Te Puku o Te Ika I - I picked this was one as 2nd because I liked the little thing on their head during the dance. It makes their costume pop out more.
#3 - Te Iti Kahurangi - I picked this one as third because it was my least favourite one and also in the beginning was a little scary for me. It was scary for me because they were shouting in the beginning and because it was too loud for me, and I don’t like things that are too loud or scary for me. I think the shouting was part of the singing and the people wearing costumes were shouting.

Summer Learning Journey Day 3

Day 3 - It’s all in the Family
Activity 1 - The more, the Merrier
On your blog, please tell us how you would feel. Would you enjoy being a member of such a large family? Why or why not?

I would feel annoyed because I come from a big family they are very loud, I am the youngest
and it sucks being the youngest because I have to do the chores and chores isn’t my thing
that I like. I wouldn’t enjoy being a member of such a large family because then
they will touch my things without asking. They would also eat my food and we sleep together
they take up the whole space. They are very loud. I wouldn’t enjoy being a member of
such a large family because we might argue a lot.

Activity 2 - Acknowledging Ancestry
When you have completed your pepeha, post it on your blog. You could even post a video of you reading out your pepeha.
(The ones that I left those out is because I am not maori)
My Pepeha
Ko Mt Wellington te maunga
Ko Point England river te awa
Ko Silongo Lahi tōku tīpuna
Ko America ahau
Ko Toni rāua ko Ana ōku mātua
Ko Dianne tōku ingoa.

Summer Learning Journey Day 2

Day 2 - It’s All in a Day’s work.
Activity 1 - A House or a Home.
On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home. What are two similarities and two differences between a wharepuni and your house?

The first thing that is similar about the 2 houses is  when you come inside you have to take off your shoes.

The second thing that is similar about the houses is that they both have a door and windows

The first thing that is different between the 2 houses is that the wharepuni has a roof that I think is made out of flax. My mum’s house roof is made from tin, I think.

The second thing that is different about the 2 houses is that the wharepuni has crazy carvings on the door and our door is plain wood.

Activity 2 - The Rules Of Engagement.
What is your dream job? Draw a picture of yourself doing your dream job and post it on your blog. You could be a doctor, an actor or even a zookeeper! I have drawn myself taking a picture of a beautiful castle in Poland because I would love to become a travel blogger and photographer one day.

For my dream job I would like to be a photographer.
Bonus Activity - Special Meals
On your blog, post a picture of your favourite meal. Be sure to tell us what it is and why it is your favourite. You could also include the recipe if you have it so that we can all try it!

My favourite meal is called Sipi and my mum makes it at home, it is very delicious. Sipi is made from lamb, it is my favourite meal because I like Tongan meals and sipi is one of the best Tongan meals. I love it because when I was little my mum use to cook sipi with other Tongan food for me and my brother . Sipi is softer than steak and easier to eat  It feels soft and smooth in my mouth.
Lu Sipi (taro leaf with lamb)

Cut meat into bite size pieces. Measure other ingredients accordingly. Cut out a piece of foil for each lu sipi. Lay several lu leaves(taro leaves on the aluminum foil overlapping the leaves on top of each other. Spread out several pieces of sipi(lamb) on top of the lu leaves. Put onion pieces into the lu sipi. Pour coconut milk as desired. Gather lu leaves around, and fold the foil close. Bake on cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until cooked.

Summer Learning Journey Day 1

Week One: In the Beginning (1800-1870)
Activity 1
On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man.
What other stories have you heard about Maui?

3 Facts about Maui
1.I have learned that Maui wanted to go fishing with his older brothers.
2.I have also learned that Maui has his own hook that is a jawbone that his Ancestor Murirangawhenua gave him.
3.I have also learned that Murirangawhenua his Ancestor said to him that he will be a good fisherman.

Stories What I have heard about Maui
I have only heard the story about how Maui brought fire to world.

Activity 2: Setting Sail
On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand.

Dear Akesa,
I will be going on a trip to New Zealand, a new country.
They invited me to their trip to New Zealand and I accepted it and I accepted it because I want to travel
where I haven’t been to.

On the way there I was very terrified because I saw a sharks fin and I was so worried that it might bite my
that I sat still and didn’t move.
I saw a lot of clown fishes, they were so cute but I didn’t get close to the clown fish because something
might go wrong.

While we were still on our way to New Zealand it was getting dark and I was scared because we might not
see anything and we might be going the wrong way and then we might end up in a pod of crocodiles but
lucky one of the travelers had a torch and we made it safe.
Akesa, I have tell you, you are so lucky that you are not here.
Dianne

Bonus Activity: Waka Ama
Watch this short video of a Waka Ama race. On your blog tell us whether you would like to be in a Waka Ama race one day.
Why or why not?

I would like to join the Waka Ama race on day.
Why I would like to join the Waka Ama

I want to know how to paddle that fast and if we lose then that’s alright so I can learn what do I need to do
to win and as long as we try.
I liked the race because they paddled so fast that I think that no one can do it.
I think that in the Waka Ama if you practise tons of it then it will be easy and I also think that
you just have to think about yourselves and don’t let anyone distract you.
I think you have to be strong and fast because you will need it for the Waka Ama.
