Summer Learning Journey Day 5

Day 5 - The Dawn of a New Era...
Activity 1 - Translating Phrases
Use Google Translate to translate the following five phrases from English to
Te Reo Māori or from Te Reo Māori to English. Post the translations on your blog.
Be sure to include the phrase in both the English and Māori to earn full points.

  1. Nau mai ki Aotearoa -     Welcome to New Zealand
  2. ____ is my name  -    Ko Toku Ingoa
  3. What is your name? - he aha to ingoa
  4. He pai taku ki te takaro i te whutupaoro. -    I like to play rugby
  5. Where do you come from? -     no hea koe?

Activity 2 - The Treaty of Waitangi
On your blog, tell us three fun things that you can do as a visitor in Waitangi.
Which one would you like to do the most?

1. You can learn tons of facts about Maori culture from the past to the present.
2. You can learn how to build different things from flax and learn about other Maori
crafts.
3. You can visit the Marae which is a courtyard of a Maori meeting house and you
can also learn different kinds of games that Maori used to play and still do today.

The one that I like the most is visit Maraes and learn Maori games.

I like this one the most because you can learn many things from these 2 activities.

Bonus Activity - #EarnTheFern
On your blog, write four questions that you would ask Bill Kini.

1. How does it feel to win a gold medal for being the best heavyweight boxer?
2. Have you tried any other sports other than rugby and boxing?
3. Who inspired you to become a boxer?

4. When was your first match and where did it take place?

  1. Hey there Dianne, great job on completing more activities!
I love the way you have written your answers in red - it makes it super easy to see!

I really like your four questions you have designed for Bill Kini. I especially like the first question asking him about how it felt to win the gold medal. It's a great question because it is likely to get a lengthy answer. It encourages him to open up and share some of his personal feelings with you. That always leads to a great interview.

    So well done!

    Billy

  2. Hi Dianne,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey team! Great to see that you've been working on these activities. Well done!

You've translated the Maori sentences well. Don't forget to add your name in the sentence! Otherwise it won't make any sense.

There are heaps of fun things to do at Waitangi! You've found 3 good options that would be fun to do. I would have liked to learn about Maori flax and crafts. Have you been to Waitangi before? I have been a few times and always enjoy walking around the Treaty Grounds and learning more about Aotearoa's history.

I look forward to reading more of your blog over summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.
